How Do You Install a Geyser?

geyser installation

Install a New Geyser

Installing a geyser is a technical process that requires careful preparation and compliance with South African National Standards (SANS 10254). While DIY is possible, hiring a plumbing company is strongly recommended for safety and insurance compliance.

  1. Preparation & Mounting
Choose a suitable location—level, accessible, and protected if outdoors. Secure the geyser to wall brackets or straps strong enough to hold its weight. Positioning is crucial to allow easy maintenance and efficiency.
  2. Water Connections
Connect the cold water inlet (bottom) and hot water outlet (top) using copper piping. Install a drip tray with a 40mm PVC drainpipe leading outside to prevent water damage.
  3. Safety Components
Fit a pressure control valve, vacuum breakers (30cm above the highest point), and a temperature & pressure (TP) valve with an overflow pipe directed outside. These parts protect the geyser from pressure build-up and siphoning risks.
  4. Electrical Setup
Wire the geyser through a miniature circuit breaker for protection. Ensure switches are insulated and safely positioned away from water. Always turn off the mains before working on electrical connections.
  5. Testing & Safety Checks
Fill the geyser slowly, release trapped air, and check for leaks. Test the heating element and verify proper grounding, correct valve operation, and safe spacing around the unit.

Key Considerations:

  • Always use pipe lagging to reduce heat loss.
  • Install the geyser close to hot water outlets for efficiency.
  • Compliance with SANS regulations is essential for safety and insurance validity.
  • For peace of mind, entrust geyser installation to a licensed, SANS-compliant plumber and contact Flush and Rush today!
